I thought I'd keep a running list of great places to go with young kids (our kids are ages 3 and 5):
(1) Healesville Sanctuary - it is a long walk around but there are also "fast tracks" so you can skip back to the entrance. They make you go right through / past a store with lots of kid enticements available. It's not cheap (kids are free but adults are costly). The animals are AMAZING. Best not to go on a blistering hot day as there isn't a lot of shade. My kids LOVED it. We went early (got there at 11). They have a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating and a fair amount of options - popsicles, french fries, coffees, meat options.
(2) Collingwood Children's Farm - they have a farmer's market on the 2nd Saturday of the month, which is an added bonus. They have peacocks, chickens, rooster, goats, sheep, cows, pigs and horses. They also milk a cow in front of an audience and kids can try to milk the cow. They have a little cafe with coffees, popsicles, muffins, sandwiches. It was AU$2 per person to get in (yes, 2).
(3) Boxhill swimming center - it was AWESOME. Really wonderful community center. They sold swim suits, goggles, floaties, everything you might need, right at the entrance. They have a great cafe. The kid pool is WARM and so much fun stuff for the kids. My kids didn't need much supervision at all because the place is totally set up to cater to 4-5 year olds.
(4) East Bentleigh GSAC - another impressive pool, with a cafe and stuff for sale. But this one was NUTS. SO so so busy (hot day, kid centered, school holidays here). It was a sensory overload with a lot of kids and squirt guns and slides. But there was a very warm, .75 meter deep, "swim lesson" pool where young kids and their adults were practicing swimming. We spent a ton of time in there and it was fun.
(5) BEST PLACE - Melbourne Museum - it has so much for kids. A forest exhibit, a dinosaur exhibit, an exhibit with hundreds of Aussie birds and animals on display, including many who are now extinct, an IMax 3D with fantastic kid-friendly movies, an entire HUGE space dedicated to children (complete with snacks and coffee) which my kids played in for hours. GO HERE!
(6) Luna Park - about half of the rides were appropriate for young kids. And, we figured out cost wise that we could buy unlimited rides for the kiddos and only one single ride pass for me in case they needed to be accompanied on a ride. It was much cheaper than buying passes for all of us, and I only needed to go on one ride with them (at the very end). We 2 adults were allowed to ride for free on the carousel and one other ride because the girls were "too short" to ride on their own. Definitely worth a trip. They had a fair amount of food there, too, to keep kids well fed.
(7) Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne - complete with a "Children's Garden," this place is wonderful. The main gardens is lush and gorgeous, a great place for kids to burn off steam and run around. There are cafes with good food. The Children's Garden is complete with lots of shade for parents / kids to relax, a stream running through it, a splash pad area, hidden paths and climbing structures, a sand area ... it is delightful ... and completely fenced off!!!
Sounds like so many amazing, kid friendly places!
