Jan. 18 & 19 - Cape Otway!

Jan. 18: After a quick trip to an urgent care facility for Ii (she fell off the couch and hit her head on the corner of the coffee table, splitting her forehead open), we were off. G and I had rented a car (I am the driver, achieving my junior wingwoman wings quickly. Grandma and Opa rode with Helen, and Jeremy and Lena came after work in their car. It was about 3.5 hours of driving, the last hour or so in real country. We saw our first koala, sadly she was dead in the middle of the road (a sad reminder / lesson in what humans have done to koalas). Then we arrived, and within 5 seconds of turning into the long driveway that leads to our rental home, we saw our first, and second, koala! Then we saw more. Then we saw a mama and a baby. And more.

There are no blinds on the bedroom windows upstairs, so bedtime for the girls was when the sun finally was set and the sky was dark (i.e. 9pm!). They slept like rocks and we didn't see them again until 7am! Then the fun started again. After some morning art and some sitting outside while the morning sun warmed us and we watched koalas, we headed off to the Cape Otway Lighthouse. It was a very impressive place. We climbed the 77-odd stairs to the top and breathed in the fresh ocean air. Then we sat at the cafe (which was impressive in its own right - everything was hand made and eco-friendly) and the girls had their first-ever home-made scones, jam and cream.

As we head out of the Lighthouse area, we found a koala sitting right in the road. We stopped traffic in both directions and ushered her across the street. We spent a little time in Apollo Bay (which means I sat in the car while the girls slept soundly and G, Jeremy and Lena got a beer at the local brewery). We then head back to the house and took the little boat out onto the river the house sits on.

Back to shore for more koala watching and just hanging out in the sunshine. Then art with Uncle Jeremy and Auntie Lena before a delicious taco dinner. Jeremy and Lena did bedtime!

  1. Judging by the little fleeces on the maniacs and other sartorial hints, it must be cooler at the cape.

Can’t get enough of those koalas.

Good job driving, Moose! Love to you all.

  2. So incredible that you got to see so many koalas! I'm also in awe that your girls still take naps every day. It was a sad day (for me) when naps came to an end at our house this past year.
