Feb. 11-12: Geraldton
We headed to the HMAS Sydney Memorial (https://www.hmassydneymemorialgeraldton.com.au), a memorial to a ship that was sunk by Germans in disguise 60 km off the coast. It was absolutely gorgeous, overlooking the town and the sea. While there, hundreds of cockatoos flew over our heads making their loud noises. We learned later that cockatoos are like Portland’s crows and the city is annoyed by their presence and numbers. The rangers will apparently shopt into the air to scatter them, which is what we experienced.
We went to Sunset Indian Restaurant for dinner. Then home to our Geraldton Ocean’s West Apartment. Everyone slept well!
We headed to downtown Geraldton for breakfast at Saltdish, a well known breakfast / brunch / coffee spot. Delicious food! Then we explored Geraldton a little, finding giant crayola markers as road crossing signs (painted “children color our world”) and a beautiful mural with “welcome” in over 30 languages.
We also found Geraldton to be covered in palm trees *and* quasi-fir trees.
We packed up the car on our way to Perth. Half way there (2.5 hours) we will stop in Cervantes to check out the Pinnacles. Then to Perth for two nights.
