Fitzroy Island, March 11-15

We had an absolutely amazing time on Fitzroy Island. Heading here was sort of an unknown, as neither G nor I had ever been to the Cairns / Cairns island area before. But we wanted to explore on this trip, and explore is what we did. Fitzroy is gorgeous. It is over 330 hectares large, and over 320 of that is protected National Park. It is absolutely covered with glorious, large trees, with the Fitzroy Island resort part sitting on one small beach area. We took a 45 minute fast cataman over there and then head to our beachfront (really, everything on this small resort is beachfront) cabin.

We played in the pool a lot. And we SNORKELED a lot. It's "stinger season" from November to May on Fitzroy, meaning the box jellyfish, Irukanji and ohter jellyfish are in the area. We were warned to have stinger suits, so we bought them in Melbourne and brought them with us. When we booked (and then later were told of stinger season), we were worried about making the decision to come. Turns out, our fears were for naught. We had a brilliant time snorkeling, and the full-body stinger suits actually just served to help keep the girls extra warm!

And C quit her snorkeling boycott and snorkeled her heart out. She was actually the one who was most excited about it (perhaps because she hasn't snorkeled at all since early Feb., while her sisters have snorkeled everywhere they could). Nonetheless, they were all thrilled to be in the bathwater-warm ocean. And on our final day snorkeling there, we all got to swim with a turtle. It was the perfect (likely) ending to snorkeling this trip as we don't expect to snorkel anywhere else.
