Florida road trip part 1: Homestead and Biscayne National Park

Wednesday morning, we took a direct flight from Portland to Miami, grabbed our rental car and made our way south to an air b&b in Homestead. Homestead is the gateway to both Biscayne NP and the Everglades, but our purpose was Biscayne. The kids hopped right into the pool while Geoff took care of dinner and I did some bed arranging and unpacking.

The pool glowed all different colors at night!

More swimming in the morning, which, thanks to the time change, was actually close to lunchtime Florida-time!

Next stop that morning was “Robert is Here” fruit & veggie stand. It was soooo cool! So many delicious and unknown-to-us fruits and delicious smoothies. And a host of rescued animals, as apparently there is a lot of illegal trade in and keeping of exotic animals in south Florida. An emu (and emu eggs for sale for $65! They’re deep blue!). https://www.robertishere.com/

We tried: ugli fruit, dragon fruit and guanabana!

Next stop that busy day was the Biscayne National Park and a 1:30-5 snorkel trip! It was glorious, warm water and we saw so many fish *and* snorkeled with lobsters: a first time for us!!

As we were leaving at park closing time, a park ranger of 33 years asked the kids to help him take down and fold the American flag.

We grabbed dinner at a delightful Cuban spot named Chefs on the run!

The next morning (Friday), we stopped at the Everglades Outpost on our way out of town. It is a sanctuary for abused and illegally traded animals <sigh>. It was incredibly moving and we were glad we stopped by.

That was it for our time in Homestead! Next stop: drive down to Key West and Dry Tortugas National Park!
